As the site was so large they were able to create an “adult theme park” alongside their new brewery with a capacity of over 700, 72 Beer taps, a hidden tiki bar, a lagoon, a waterfall, a shipping container full of arcade games and a retractable roof. After finding an old Toyota car parts factory in Preston to develop a new brewery using $9 million of old and new shareholders plus private debt, Moon Dog World opened. As the brand grew they expanded their site and opened Ballroom Oasis, a bar and function hall they also took over another site in Duke Street but outgrew their production capacity the following year in 2017. A Lager, a Pale Ale and a Dark Ale were released as part of a fixed range in 2016. While sticking to this line of experimental products it was said they would never have a core range or repeat releases, but with growing competition and experimental Beers becoming more widespread they flipped on this decision. In 2013 Moon Dog released a barrel-aged Ale called “ Great American Challenge” which is said to be named after the world’s largest dildo and featured a spandex covered Dan Aykroyd on the label just one of many wacky creations. Early years of the brewery were extremely experimental and only attracted adventurous drinkers. ![]() The name “ Moon Dog” comes from a blind, homeless composer called “ Moondog” that Karl and Josh met in the US whom they found innovative and inspiring. ![]() ![]() Karl and Josh attended university together and while doing so they were building a brewery on Duke Street, Melbourne.
